Achilles tendon & Calf inflammation

Tennis leg

This injury, known as tennis leg, is caused in the simmilar way to other tennis injuries, by the overuse of the underdeveloped muscle/tendon group. Calf muscle and Achilles tendon work together in order to rise your upper body or make you jump, by the relative movement of the ball of the foot in relationship with the heel. One can tell that calf muscle / Achilles tendon group had become tight when, with the leg extended, one can not rise the ball of the foot pass the heel of that foot.

There are several stages to this injury. The most benign is Achilles Tendonitis, which is painful inflammation of the Achilles tendon as a result of the overuse.

Achilles tendon and Calf inflammation

Cure

At this stage cure is relatively simple and it would consist of taking a rest, reducing the playing time, taking NSAIDs drugs or doing the exercise with an aim to strengthen the calf and Achilles Tendon group. NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) are group of the anti-inflammatory medications, of which aspirin is a member. It would be best to take advice from your doctor if you think you will need them. Prevention: An efficient way to strengthen calf muscles is by setting the barbell on your shoulders, while standing on the raised piece of support, in a such a way that your full weight is rested on your toes and the ball of the foot, while heels are free to rise and fall bellow the raised support level.

Rapture of the Achilles tendon and the tennis leg

The more serious injury stage is a rapture of the Achilles tendon and the tennis leg. First, lets talk, about Achilles tendon. This injury is felt like a sudden snap in a back of your foot. The rupture of Achilles tendon is not extremely painful, so player can continue using his foot. With the Achilles tendon ruptured, one will be able to walk flat-footed, but he (or she) will not be able to stand up on his toes. Only treatment for this injury is casting or in more serious cases surgery.

Tennis leg is the name for stretching, tearing or complete rupture of the larger of the two calf muscles, on the inside of the leg. It particularly happens to the players after they are 40. One may feel sharp piercing pain, as if struck by a needle. It might be difficult to walk and the area of the muscle might get discolored with swelling. In some cases a depression in the muscle might become noticeable.

Cure

A self-treatment part should consist of RICE, that stands for Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation of the wounded limb. Recovery would be improved if physician prescribes a program of rehabilitation. This injury can take several weeks to heal. Prevention: like for the most tennis injuries, work on strengthening of your muscles prior to the game and allocate the time before you start playing to worming up.
