Russia's Maria Kirilenko upset eighth-seeded Slovak Daniela Hantuchova 7-5, 6-2 on the opening day of the Zurich Open here Monday, as former world number one Amelie Mauresmo crashed out.

There was little to separate Kirilenko and Hantuchova in the first set of a match that rarely rose above the ordinary, as many of the games were closely fought and play went to deuce 16 times.

After breaks in the first two games, Hantuchova fought off five more break points until, with the Slovak leading 5-4, both players called for a medical time-out.

Mauresmo, who has dropped outside the top 20 this season after being plagued by injuries and poor form, was trailing 4-3 in the final set but won the last three games to secure her first win since reaching the fourth round of the US Open.

French hopes of a first-up Hopman Cup tennis triumph have been given a massive boost following confirmation that Alize Cornet will team up with Gilles Simon to represent the country.

Cornet, ranked No. 18 in the world, burst onto the scene at the Italian Open earlier this year when she beat Serena Williams, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Anna Chakvatadze en route to the final.

Simon is ranked No. 17 in the world and has won three ATP tournaments this year.

Russia's Elena Dementieva secured a spot in the season-ending WTA Championships with a 6-0 6-3 win over France's Alize Cornet at the Pan Pacific Open on Thursday.

The Olympic champion required just 69 minutes to win her opening match and book her place in the quarter-finals of the $1.34 million Tokyo tournament.

The third seed, ranked fourth in the world, has won twice on the WTA Tour this year, including victory at last month's Beijing Olympics, going one better than her silver in 2000.
