Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi and John McEnroe are among the tennis stars set to compete in the redesigned Champions Series for over-30 players.

The tour's 2011 schedule is being announced Tuesday. It includes one-night stops in 12 cities over five weeks. The season begins Sept. 22 at Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and finishes Oct. 22 at Buffalo, N.Y.

Four men participate at each event, playing one-set semifinals. The winners meet in an eight-game, pro-set championship match.

Borg says Soderling will reach No. 1 ranking

Bjorn Borg is predicting that Swedish compatriot Robin Soderling will soon reach the No. 1 ranking after beating Roger Federer in the French Open quarterfinals.

Borg described Soderling’s play against Federer on Tuesday as “perfect” and said the seventh-ranked Swede could surpass both the Swiss star and Rafael Nadal in the rankings.

Borg told Swedish newspaper Expressen on Wednesday that Soderling “will become the world’s No. 1, and will do it faster than we can expect.”

Second seed Philipp Kohlschreiber beat Bjorn Phau of Germany for the third time this year on an indoor hard-court at the Open de Moselle, an ATP World Tour 250 tennis tournament, on Wednesday.  Kohlschreiber, who triumphed 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in one hour and 49 minutes for a place in the quarter-finals, also beat Phau at the BMW Open in Munich (clay) and the Gerry Weber Open in Halle (grass).

When Roger Federer shows up at Wimbledon without Rafael Nadal looking down at him from the top of the draw, it will feel like Bjorn Borg has arrived without John McEnroe or Pete Sampras minus Andre Agassi.

In an era when Federer-Nadal showdowns are starting to reach epic proportions, the Swiss will have to go it alone for the first time next week since the 2006 Australian Open when the Spaniard missed out due to a foot injury.

 A year after Bjorn Borg wrote off Roger Federer's chances of capturing the 2008 Wimbledon title, the Swedish great was once again backing the Swiss to triumph at the All England Club.

Borg tipped Rafael Nadal to win the grasscourt major 12 months ago and despite being proved right, his comments did not go down well with Federer.

But after the Swiss completed his collection of grand slam titles by triumphing at Roland Garros nine days ago, the Swede has once again switched his allegiance.
