Masters Cup

Novak Djokovic believes it is possible for him to claim the world number one spot in 2009.

Currently third in the ATP rankings, the Serb is just 10 points behind second-placed Roger Federer, with Rafael Nadal the present world leader.

However, the 21-year-old feels the order could well change in the coming months.

He said: "Being number one in the ATP rankings is always my goal and I think it's reachable. I have enough quality to get there, but I must be careful not to forget my priorities in trying to achieve that goal.

Roger Federer has turned his thoughts to getting his 2009 season off to a flying start after beating James Blake in an exhibition match in Macau.

So Andy Murray's season ended in a disappointing defeat at the Masters Cup at the weekend, but what a year it's been.

Five ATP titles, including two in the prestigious Masters Series, and a first Grand Slam final prove Murray has truly turned potential into success. At least to me it does.

However, the wider British public will, rightly or wrongly, decide whether his career is a success or not on two factors - whether he wins a Grand Slam title or not and whether he ever climbs to the top of the world rankings.

Satisfying endings, like beauty, are in the eyes of the beholder, even though tennis produces them on a week-to-week basis rather than a season-to-season one. Ours is the convenience store of sports; it's open all the time, even though the ATP and WTA championships are notional year-end playoffs.

Novak Djokovic is trying his best to complete Serbia’s ascension to the top of the tennis world.

Jelena Jankovic, who won the U.S. Open, already is No. 1 on the women’s side, a spot that compatriot Ana Ivanovic, the French Open winner, held earlier in the year before slipping to fifth.

Nenad Zimonjic became the top doubles player when he and Canada’s Daniel Nestor teamed to beat Bob and Mike Bryan for the Masters Cup doubles title Sunday and end the American twins’ four-year run atop the year-end rankings.

Novak Djokovic’s victory celebration turned out to be more dangerous than his opponent.

Jubilant after overwhelming Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko 6-1, 7-5 in the Masters Cup final Sunday, Djokovic tossed just about everything in reach—two rackets, wristbands and his sweat-soaked shirt—into the cheering crowd at Qi Zhong stadium.

Novak Djokovic's Masters Cup triumph marked the end of a four-year Shanghai sojourn for the tournament and might also have brought down the curtain on the Roger Federer era at the season-ending championships.

Federer had played in the previous seven Masters Cups and the last five finals, losing out only in 2005 when David Nalbandian came back to beat the injured Swiss in a fifth set tiebreak.
