Jelena Jankovic heads into the season-ending WTA championships which started on Monday as the top-ranked tennis player and with the knowledge that she will keep this place for the rest of the year. The Serb Jankovic tops the latest rankings issued on Monday with 4,555 points and can't be toppled at the final event of the year in Doha which brings together the leading eight players. Russia's Dinara Safina is second on 3,752 points and Serena Williams of the US third on 3,716 in an unchanged top 10.

US Open champion Serena Williams tops the latest women's tennis rankings issued on Monday by the WTA while Russia's Dinara Safina moves up two places to third.
Williams has 4,091 points and is followed by Serbia's Jelena Jankovic on 3,885 and Safina on 3,747. Former number one Ana Ivanovic of Serbia drops one spot to fourth with Russia's Elena Dementieva down one place to fifth.

In a Sony Ericsson WTA Tour first, six women headed into the same tournament with a shot at the No.1 ranking. As we embark on the second week of the US Open that short list is hardly shorter, as five of them can still have the post-New York top spot - Ana Ivanovic, Jelena Jankovic, Serena Williams, Elena Dementieva and Dinara Safina.

Ana Ivanovic remained top of the women's WTA tennis rankings Monday, a week after she reclaimed the top spot from fellow Serb Jelena Janokovic, who enjoyed just seven days as number one.
Ivanovic had led the rankings since June 9, after her victory at the French Open, where she defeated Jankovic in the semi-finals.
Olympic women's doubles gold medallist Serena Williams of the United States moved up one place to third.

The Sony Ericsson WTA Tour has crowned Jelena Jankovic as the new world No.1, as the official rankings were published on Monday, August 11, 2008.
Jankovic replaces Serbian compatriot Ana Ivanovic, who has held No.1 for nine weeks from June 9 to August 10, 2008. Ivanovic was the first player representing Serbia to become No.1, with Jankovic now following right behind. The two are projected to be in close competition the next few weeks for the top ranking.
