Bravo Jelena and Ljubo
It has been a while since a big event could give such a pleasant surprise in terms of winners like the 2010 Indian Wells tournament. Jelena Jankovic and Ivan Ljubicic are both very sympathetic players who produced some great comeback-tennis after a period of various difficulties.
For me, Jelena has always been one of the most enjoyable players to watch, her positive, easy-going attitude and her ability to always bring forward a smile give her a loveable personality, and her tennis is also entertaining, being a smart and tactical player instead of slugging at the ball from every position.
After having reached the Nr. 1 ranking in 2008, JJ experienced a career slump during the 2009 season, partly because of choosing the wrong training tactics during the off-season, building muscles to give her more strength, while her biggest advantage on court is her great movement.
But there must have been a mental side to it as well, as we have seen with many other female players nowadays who have reached the top. Being able to stay at the very top once you have got there is not the strength of today's players, and JJ was no exception.
The players from former Yugoslavia as such also seem to have consistency problems, they shine brilliantly in certain moments, then they produce some disappointing results.
But Jelena's performance in Sunday's final was a pure joy to watch - I believe she played the best tennis of her career so far - including when she was Nr. 1 - let's not forget that her opponent, Caroline Wozniacki is one of the most in-form players at the moment.
I also think that apart from Novak Djokovic, Jelena has the biggest chance for consistency among the Serbians - as she also showed during 2008.
Ivan Ljubicic is a true tennis veteran who you feel "should" lose against the very top players. He is not a great mover on the court, sometimes he can even seem a little too comfortable. Instead, he relies on a huge serve, good anticipation and strong shotmaking from both sides.
But I believe the reason for winning the title at Indian Wells was ultimately that he showed real fighting skills, being able to concentrate on big points like never before. It was his first ever Masters title and he fully deserved it.
It remains to see whether JJ and Ljubo can back up these fine wins (obviously, Jelena has a bigger chance, considering her still young age and the current situation in women's tennis). But nevertheless, at the moment, I can only say congratulations, well done both, and good luck for the rest of the season!
