Cautious mindset is the big problem for Murray
After Murrays latest defeat in a slam to a big hitter theres been the usual talk of how he needs to be more aggressive on court.
They say in tennis you should play to your personality. Well i think Murray just naturally likes to go on court and be cautious. Its ingrained in him. If he goes for a winner and misses you can almost see the pain it causes him. He hates missing. Hes probably thinking " Why did i miss that shot when i could have stayed in the rally and gave my opponent a chance to miss?"
Watch him in a rally when he hits his backhand - very rarely does he hit this shot as hard as he can. I wonder why? Unlike his forehand his backhand is a truly world class shot which can be very good offensively. But he chooses a lot of the time to just flick the ball back with spin cross court. Why not hit the ball off this side more?
Compare Murray to someone like Agassi. Agassi used to zip around the back of the court with an incredible urgency about him. He was looking to attack every ball possible and given that he won all the Grand Slam events at least once it seems this wasnt a bad strategy.
Murray will never change his cautious mindset without changing his coaching team i dont think. Its time to bin the yes men and get someone in his box who is worth listening to. Look at the progress Andy Roddick has made under Stefanki. Apparently when Roddick first got together with Stefanki he said to him "Here I am, tell me what ive got to do and i will do it" Somehow i cant see Murray succumbing to the greater knowledge of someone else because he ultimately thinks he knows best.
