Gulbis emerges at last
It appears Ernests Gulbis has finally broken through after a few years of unfulfilled promise.
I remember watching him play Carlos Moya at the US Open in 2007. His groundstrokes were pretty much a danger to aviation. His forehand appeared to go in on about one occasion in 10 but when it did go in it was invariably a screaming winner.
What hes shown here in Rome is that hes finally learnt to control that huge power. His groundstrokes have been a revelation and his serve incredibly potent even on his second delivery. He has also shown composure, coming back from losing his serve late on against Federer to win and recovering from a break down vs Lopez.
His emergence raises a good point about the development of players too. Its said that Andre Agassi's dad used to say to him whilst teaching him the game: "hit the ball hard son, and one day you will learn to control it". It seems Gulbis has been following the same advice.
