Murray squanders chance

Andy Murray prepared for this month’s US Open by reaching the final of The Farmers Classic in Los Angeles. While Murray will be satisfied with how he played during the tournament, his performance in the final against Sam Querrey, won’t have pleased him.

After taking the first set 7-5, Murray had a second set match point to win the tie, only to screw his backhand wide. American Querrey managed to hold his serve and won the set 7-6 after winning the tie-break 7-2. When Murray was broken in the final set to make it 4-2 to Querrey, the match was all but over. Six foot six Querrey, faced a break point as he served for the match at 5-3, but he held on for the win.

Tennis betting pundits note how Murray’s form this season has been a mixed bag. After starting the year by reaching the Australian Open Final, Murray suffered poor run of results. His season picked up this summer when the Scot reached the semi final at Wimbledon, where he met an impeccable Rafael Nadal. His split from coach Miles Maclagan last month could have disrupted Murray’s preparation for Flushing Meadows.

It didn’t look to have affected the 23 year old too badly as he finished runner-up in Los Angeles. Murray only decided to enter the tournament at the last minute.

Murray will be keen to improve on his previous performances in the US Open. Murray was a beaten finalist in 2008 when he fell at the last hurdle against Rodger Federer. Last year Murray’s tournament was hampered by a wrist injury as he reached the fourth round. Maran Cilic took advantage of Murray’s injury to beat the Scot. With Murray injury free this year it wouldn’t be unthinkable according to the tennis odds that that he could once again reach the final.
