Groin strain
How does groin strain happen?
Groin strain, aka groin pull, can happen when playing on the slippery
surface. You go for a volley swing, you try to support yourself
on your front leg, but sometimes tarmac can be very dusty, or worst,
wet and that leg slips causing a group of muscles, called adductor
muscles, to strain. Main role of this group of five muscles is
to pull legs together and also to help with the movement of the
hips. In tennis adductor muscles are for sprints. The pain caused
by groin pull can be sudden and acute. In the most severe cases,
injured player will complain about spasm, swelling, bruising and
will not be able to walk.
Treatment of the groin strain:
Apply RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation). Use massage after acute pain had subsided. If muscles are torn completely the injury will need operation. Rehabilitation program will consist of soft tissue treatment, stretching and sports massage.
Groin pull prevention:
The best prevention for the groin pull is exercise. Like with other groups of inconspicuous muscles, we have to reach to somewhat awkward setups to get them exercised. To exercise adductor muscles, we need to find an unobstructed corner, where floor and wall meet. Than while laying down, on our back, one should lean his (or her) legs against the wall, forming a letter V. Sides of the V letter should be at 45 deg. and exercise consist of closing and opening the gap, practically, alternating the change of the letter V into the letter I, and so on. Although, very efficient exercise, one may find that onlookers might find entertaining to watch.
