Boban,
Only a hardy 5 players braved the cold yesterday. I managed a rare victory over Martin M 6-2 and nearly managed to go home after that. However, Brian, who had been harrassing me for a match ever since I moved into the #1 spot, took me apart 6-3. Takes the pressure off somewhat anyway!

Hi Boban,
I played Martin last Sunday very cold; had one set which I won 6-1
Martin
was dragging a dodgy leg around the court so not at his best. I was
very
sympathetic but after the set was over.

Spring is around the corner - where are all the Sunday players?

We all know the past few Sundays have been bitterly cold with frost on the ground. Time to resurrect the play and the postage of post match excuses (or excessive claims of prowess) on this site. As you know, Boban has been somewhat "hors de combat" lately and is very busy launching his own company.

If anyone wants to email me the match results I would be happy to try and keep our WLTC ladder blog current. [Email to john.symon@btinternet.com]

Suggest we go with the ladder as it last stood. (It must be reasonably accurate as I managed to hedge out Nigel in a gripping couple of sets a few weeks ago to maintain a thin lead over him while he was still in recovery mode).

See you on court this Sunday?

David Stephens rallies to beat Andrey in a gripping final

A wildcard, David Stephens captured the 2005 year-end championship title. It was a gripping final; Andrey started well and went ahead 3-1 but suddenly started limping indicating a knee injury. After a short medical timeout Andrey came back but still clearly struggling with around the court movement. David, being more experienced took advantage of his opponent’s weakness and started playing long relies and spreading the ball from side to side. He eventually managed to turn the match around to take a decisive 5-3 lead – or so he thought. After some energy boosting and somewhat intimidating shouts in Russian, Andrey came back to life and while leading 6-5 he served for the match. It was his worst service game of the day which allowed David to take the match to tie-break.

In the breaker, David managed to last longer and won the match 7-6(5).

When they walked in the club house they received a standing ovation from the jubilant crowd. It was a fitting final for a marathon day of tennis.

In the quarter finals, John had Andrey beaten and literally on the ground but the Russian recovered again and went on to the semi-finals where he posted a surprisingly easy victory against the tournament favourite, Martin Morris.

In the other quarter final Boban posted a very close and very intensive 7-6 win against Thumpy, arguably the best shot maker on the ladder. In the semis against David, Boban never gave any resistance, the gamble with beer and flapjack in the short interval went horribly wrong.

This was not only a tennis skills tournament but also endurance exercise, quite a few people, including #1 ranked Brian and Nigel went home undefeated but they could not last the time, it was either injuries or wives.

The prizes, Windsor Tennis Club baseball bestseller hats for the semi-finalists and a bottle of wine for the finalist was donated by club while the top prize, a bottle of Vintage Moet & Shandon champagne was donated by www.etondigital.com; acessible web design experts.

Hi Boban, Itrust you had a good match in the comfort and warmth of the indoor
courts. However us poor and hardy souls made do with dubious black courts that
allowed the balls to hold several litres of water. I did manage a set with Martin on the Pro court and scrapped home with a 6-4 win. These sets are always closely fought and we seem to take turns to win.I also beat Steve 6-2 He suddenly came to life wheh he was 5-0 down and started to play some dangerous tennis but I held on to win.
Regards Brian

Hi Boban, I played Stephen White on Saturday & won 7-6 6-4, so no change on the ladder. Can I make a suggestion? Surely the competition is not Tournament Mk2, but the "end of season Championship" - sound much better!
