Maria Kirilenko of Russia Wins First WTA
BEIJING, China - In only her second singles final, Russian teenager Maria Kirilenko has captured her first career Sony Ericsson WTA Tour title, winning the $585,000 China Open in Beijing on Sunday. The 18-year-old from Moscow collected the title by defeating No.9 seed Anna-Lena Groenefeld in Sunday's finale, 63 64. Kirilenko becomes the 11th unseeded player to win a title this season. "This is my first title and I’m so excited," Kirilenko said. "It has been a great week for me. I have played hard and I’m glad that I was able to win today. With the top seeds out, I saw my chance to play well and work hard to make it far in the tournament. It is not often that you get a chance, but this time I took it and it was good for me." Kirilenko also joins Ana Ivanovic, Klara Koukalova, Nuria Llagostera Vives, Sania Mirza, Lucie Safarova and Zheng Jie as first-time Tour title winners in 2005. She also became the fifth different player from Russia to win a title this year, joining Dinara Safina, Maria Sharapova, Vera Zvonareva and Anastasia Myskina. Myskina won her first title of the season also this week, winning the title in Kolkata.
Kirilenko did not drop a set during her week-long run in Beijing, opening her journey with victories against qualifiers Jamea Jackson and Akio Nakamura before also defeating wild card Sun Tiantian to reach the semifinals. In the semis, Kirilenko found herself on the opposite side of the net of good friend and world No.1 Maria Sharapova. But Sharapova struggled throughout the match with a right pectoral muscle strain and retired from the match while trailing 64 2-1, lifting Kirilenko into her first final of the season.
