After reaching the semis at Auckland in January and Memphis last week, Anne Keothavong became the first Brit to rank inside the world's Top 50 since Jo Durie - 16 long years ago. But the 25-year-old Londoner isn't the only Englishwoman making gains on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour. Hot on her heels, Surrey-based Melanie South slashed her ranking by half in 2008 and has her sights set on bigger things in 2009.

Top-seeded American Mardy Fish outgunned Russian qualifier Evgeny Korolev 7-5 6-3 to clinch his third ATP title at the Delray Beach International Championships on Sunday.

Three weeks after losing in the San Jose final, Fish converted three of six break points to win the opening set after the tournament final had been delayed by rain.

The 27-year-old American raced 5-2 up in the second before Korolev saved two match points on his own serve and then three more in the ninth game before Fish held to wrap up victory in one hour 33 minutes.

A good indicator of the favorite to win the Billie Jean King Cup at Madison Square Garden tonight might be who has fared best on New York hardcourts.

Answer: top-ranked Serena Williams, who beat two stars in tonight’s field — sister Venus and former No. 1 Jelena Jankovic — last year on the way to a third U.S. Open title.

The exhibition’s fourth star, Ana Ivanovic, has never even reached the U.S. Open quarterfinals.

Athletic and attractive, Nicole Vaidisova was primed to become the next Maria Sharapova and reap the benefits that inevitably follow in lucrative endorsements. But that is all in the past.

At 17, she reached the semi-finals of the 2006 French Open and the 2007 Australian Open, and ranked No. 7 in the world just after turning 18.

Now, less than two months from her 20th birthday, the six-foot, blond Czech will this week drop to about No. 80 in the WTA Tour rankings. She is playing so poorly she is a pushover for opponents.

Tennis night in America began as a morning meeting with the stars beneath chandeliers.

“Turn right at the second chandelier and you’ll find Venus,” the concierge said, offering memorably precise directions to the setting for this morning’s player press conference at the Jumeirah Essex House on Central Park South in Manhattan.

The opulence of Essex house will give way to a tennis return to the mecca, Madison Square Garden, tonight at 7:30 for the BNP Paribas Showdown for the Billie Jean King Cup.
