Djokovic endures five sets against Troicki

At their last match in New Haven a week ago, Novak Djokovic handled his childhood rival and current 47th seed Viktor Troicki the way you might expect: He beat him in straight sets.
Ferrer unchallenged by the up-and-coming Dolgopolov

The No. 10 seed David Ferrer won his first round match today against 21-year-old Alexander Dolgopolov of the Ukraine in workmanlike fashion, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3.
Blake bounces Belgium's Vliegen in straight sets

James Blake can breathe easy tonight after securing a straight-set victory over Belgium's Kristof Vliegen. The 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 win was a much-needed boost for the 30-year-old American, appearing in his 10th US Open.
Sidelined for two months with a knee injury, Blake's ATP ranking plummeted to 108th and he plays here as a Wild Card. He is also coming off a lackluster performance in the US Open Series that included first round losses in three tournaments. In other words, today's victory over Vliegen was far from assured.
Verdasco survives major scare, outlasts Fognini

Fernando Verdasco, the big-hitting, eighth-seeded Spaniard, lost the last time he met 5-foot-9 Fabio Fognini, ranked 86th. That match was the first round at Wimbledon, and it was Fognini's only career victory against a Top 10 player.
Wozniacki dispatches Gullickson in straight sets

Number one womens player Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark easily ran over American wild card Chelsey Gullickson 6-1, 6-1 in their first round match Tuesday night in Arthur Ashe.
Rafa retires Gabashvili in three tight sets

Rafael Nadal had to dig deeper than he would have liked or expected in his 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 first round win over 25-year-old Teymuraz Gabashvili of Russia on Tuesday night under the lights of Arthur Ashe.
Serves serve Sharapova well in three-set win

Little went right the last time Maria Sharapova played on Arthur Ashe Stadium. She littered the largest court in tennis with 21 double faults and 63 unforced errors en route to a three-set loss against Melanie Oudin in the 2009 US Open third round.
Back on Ashe Tuesday, Sharapova turned the statistical tables on Jarmila Groth to sneak through a first-round battle, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. The 2006 champion hit just two double faults and 17 unforced errors to the Aussie's 14 doubles and 48 mistakes.
She’s No Roger Federer

There’s no rest for the pros during Grand Slams. After Victoria Azarenka took out slice-n-dicer Monica Niculescu Monday, she was back at the National Tennis Center Tuesday to whack serve after serve down the T on Practice Court 5. But her delivery wasn’t the only thing she worked on. After a serious practice, she had a little fun trying her hand at the between-the-legs shot, what used to be known as the “Sabatweenie.”
Jelena & Mirjana To Clash

After a difficult summer lead-up, she was perhaps ripe for the picking. But playing at her best major, Jelena Jankovic's fighting spirit never waned, and the former No.1 battled hard to quell the uprising of rising star Simona Halep on Arthur Ashe Stadium on a hot Tuesday, 64 46 75.
Jankovic, the No.4 seed at the final Grand Slam of the season, battled for over two hours in scorching conditions, with Halep even serving for the match at 5-4 in the third set. But a few big down-the-line forehands and long rallies sealed it.
Azarenka collapses in second round match

Victoria Azarenka's US Open took an unfortunate and dramatic turn when the Belarusian collapsed and was helped off the court in a wheelchair during her second round match against Gisela Dulko on Wednesday.
Azarenka looked out of sorts from the first point of the match, which she double-faulted, and quickly fell to an 0-4 deficit. On the first changeover she summoned a trainer who appeared to test her for signs of dizziness and exhaustion, but did not request a medical timeout.
Ivanovic shines in win

Former world number one Ana Ivanovic took another step forward in her recent renaissance when she beat 21st seed Zheng Jie 6-3 6-0 to reach the third round of the US Open.
The Serbian, who topped the rankings just two years ago, smashed 22 winners en route to an impressive victory in just 56 minutes on a hot Arthur Ashe Stadium court.
Ivanovic was beaten in the first round in New York last year but has been slowly making her way back up the rankings and was far too strong for Zheng.
Murray makes solid start to U.S. Open title bid

Britain's Andy Murray enjoyed a trouble-free start to his U.S. Open title bid on Wednesday as he cruised to a 6-3 6-2 6-2 win over unheralded Slovakian Lukas Lacko.
The Scot, runner-up in New York in 2008 and chasing his first grand slam title, needed just one hour 51 minutes to see off the world number 71 in hot conditions inside Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The number four seed broke serve in the fourth game of the match on his way to the first set and was never unduly tested, breaking twice more to take the second set.
Harrison upsets Ljubicic in first round

If there were any doubts about the future of American men's tennis, 18-year-old Ryan Harrison silenced the critics Wednesday with a solid 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-4 upset of 31-year-old veteran Ivan Ljubicic, the No. 15 seed.
Currently ranked No. 220 in the world, Harrison earned his spot in the US Open main draw the hard way, playing his way past Jonathan Dasnieres de Veigy, Rui Machado and Ricardo Hocevar to enter as a qualifier.
Querrey Holds Off Challenge From Wild Card Klahn

No. 20 seed Sam Querrey used 19 aces to overcome a composed, gutsy performance from fellow American Bradley Klahn in four sets, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.
Querrey, one of the hottest players on tour in ATP events in 2010, has had his struggles this year in Grand Slams, falling in the first round at the Australian Open and Roland Garros. He managed to reach the round of 16 at Wimbledon, but considering his lack of success in non-majors, a loss against Klahn would have put a glaring question mark on his ability to play on the big stage.
Llodra surprises No. 7 Berdych in straight sets

The men's draw received its first significant shakeup on Wednesday, as Michael Llodra served, volleyed, sliced and diced Wimbledon finalist Tomas Berdych out of the US Open, 7-6 (3), 6-4, 6-4.
The 35th-ranked Frenchman kept the No. 7 seed off balance throughout the match by coming in off his first and second serve and mixing things up enough off the ground to secure breaks in the second and third sets.
Ivanovic takes confident next step in comeback

Ana Ivanovic, the top seed here a scant two years ago, is seeking a tour comeback at the tender age of 22, having suffered a precipitous fall that had less to do with injury than her confidence deserting her.
The personable poster girl, a former world No. 1, crashed to earth after capturing the championship at Roland Garros in 2008 and recently dropped to No. 65 in the world.
Murray breezes past Lacko

If, as the New York Times' Michael Kimmelman would have it, the themes of a good tennis match develop like the movements of a symphony, the music Andy Murray and Lukas Lacko made Wednesday was more like bad techno: fast, brutish and predictable, played entirely to the beat of Murray's serve.
The No. 4 seed barreled through his 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 first-round match in under two hours, glowering all the while but controlling most service games with a one- or two-point cushion off Lacko's errors and his own service winners.
Oudin mania comes to an end

The American teenage darling Melanie Oudin, who at last year's US Open had such a surprising, memorable run to the quarterfinals, defeating big-name players who towered over her, could not duplicate the effort this year. Despite vociferous support from the hometown crowd, the Marietta, Ga. native went out, but not without a characteristic fight, losing to Alona Bondarenko of Ukraine, 6-2, 7-5.
Venus dispatches qualifier Marino

Canadian qualifier Rebecca Marino pushed Venus Williams to a first set tiebreak this afternoon but ultimately couldn't contend with the former champion's power. The 3rd seed prevailed 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 and improved her hard-court record to 56-9.
Monfils steals win with power and flair

Gael Monfils danced his way into the third round Wednesday, surviving a tough and hard-hitting battle against Russia's Igor Andreev 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 to claim a victory on his 24th birthday.
The tone of the match was set from the beginning, with both players exchanging powerful shots from the baseline. The No. 17-seed Monfils took two breaks in the first set to steal the one-set lead, and the level of play only got better from there.
