Third seed Marion Bartoli battled back from a set down to beat Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria 2-6 6-4 7-5 for a place in the quarter-finals at the New Haven Open.

Third seed Bartoli led 4-1 in the final set but was pegged back before breaking in the 11th game and then serving out for victory.

Last year's runner-up Agnes Szavay joined her in the last eight but only after surviving a marathon late-night battle with Sara Errani of Italy, winning 6-4 6-7 6-4.

In first-round action, former world number one Amelie Mauresmo needed more than two-and-a-half hours to get past Estonia's Kaia Kanepi 6-2 6-7 6-2.

"I would have liked to have finished it in two sets, but I am pleased to win a long match," Mauresmo, who now plays fifth seed Patty Schnyder said.

"I am fine physically and I just hope to do the things I did well today well again tomorrow and to do better at the things I didn't do so well, like serve and return, which were a bit up and down."

Romanian qualifier Monica Niculescu enjoyed a shock 6-7 6-2 6-1 win over Russian Maria Kirilenko, while sixth-seeded Italian Flavia Pennetta saw off Gisela Dulko of Argentina in the day's other match.
