Third seed Iveta Benesova was pushed all the way by Elena Vesnina before eventually coming through 6-1 6-7 (5/7) 7-5 on the opening day of the Forest Hills Tennis Classic in New York on Tuesday.
After cruising through the first set, Benesova was forced to weather a fightback from her Russian opponent, who had a chance to serve for the match at 5-4 up in the third set.
However, the Czech dug deep to book her place in the quarter-finals after emerging triumphant from an encounter that lasted over two-and-a-half hours.
Elsewhere, Russian Vera Dushevina cruised past Sofia Arvidsson from Sweden 6-2 6-2, Germany's Martina Muller defeated Czech Petra Cetkovska 6-2 6-3 while Russian Ekaterina Makarova also came through in straight sets against local wildcard Gail Brodsky 7-5 6-2.
