So there is still a place for cunning in women's tennis! The wily Italian Francesca Schiavone has beaten one of this year's rising stars in the first round of the TENNIS.com Zurich Open, the 28-year-old beating the big-hitting 18-year-old Dane Caroline Wozniacki 7-6 6-2 to set up a meeting with Maria Kirilenko.

Another rising star of 2008 to perish was Agnes Szavay, the Hungarian beaten 6-4 6-0 by last year's Wimbledon runner-up Marion Bartoli. It represents an upturn in Zurich fortunes for Bartoli, who left last year's tournament on a stretcher after turning her ankle.

Wednesday's order of play is already out, and Venus Williams will open her campaign for a second Zurich title when she plays Alona Bondarenko at 16.30 local time. The prime time match is Switzerland's NO 2 Timea Bacsinszky against Katarina Srebotnik.
