The round of 16 was finalized at Roland Garros on Saturday, and it is quite a bit different from what was expected when the draw first came out. Below are some talking points as we embark on the second week in the French capital.

Top 16 seeds not in round of 16: 6
Six players who were expected to reach the last 16 didn't make it this far. No.9 seed Marion Bartoli and No.15 seed Nicole Vaidisova fell in the first round; No.6 seed Anna Chakvetadze fell in the second round; and No.5 seed Serena Williams, No.8 seed Venus Williams andNo.12 seed Agnes Szavay all fell in the third round.

Former Roland Garros champions remaining: 0
With four-time champion Justine Henin's recent retirement and other former champions Mary Pierce, Jennifer Capriati and Anastasia Myskina having been absent from the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour recently, Serena Williams came here as the only former champion in the draw, capturing the title in 2002.

Former Roland Garros runners-up remaining: 3
Elena Dementieva, Kuznetsova and Ana Ivanovic have all made the final here before but all fell a step short of the trophy. Dementieva fell to Myskina in the 2004 final, Kuznetsova fell to Henin in 2006 and Ivanovic fell to Henin in 2007.

Former Grand Slam champions remaining: 2
Maria Sharapova and Svetlana Kuznetsova are the only two players remaining to have lifted majors before, with Sharapova winning three (2004 Wimbledon, 2006 US Open, 2008 Australian Open) and Kuznetsova one (2004 US Open).

First-time Grand Slam second week appearances: 4
Unseeded players Kaia Kanepi, Petra Cetkovska, Petra Kvitova and qualifier Carla Suárez Navarro have reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the very first time. Kanepi is currently in her ninth Grand Slam main draw and Cetkovska is in her third; Kvitova and Suárez Navarro are playing in their first career Grand Slam main draws.

Players with a shot at the post-Roland Garros No.1 ranking: 4
Sharapova, Ivanovic, Jelena Jankovic and Kuznetsova all have a shot at the post-Roland Garros No.1 ranking. Current world No.1 Sharapova has the best chance of emerging No.1 - should she reach the final, she would be assured of staying at No.1, but even if she falls fourth round there are scenarios that would keep her on top. More to come in the coming days.

Players going for first Grand Slam quarterfinals: 7
In addition to the four Grand Slam second week debutantes a trio of players - namely Flavia Pennetta, Katarina Srebotnik and Victoria Azarenka - are looking to improve on previous-best Grand Slam fourth round appearances (Pennetta reached the fourth round of Wimbledon twice, Srebotnik reached the fourth round here once and Azarenka reached the fourth round of the US Open once).
