Injury Vaidisova forced to retire

Top seed Nicole Vaidisova was forced to withdraw from her first round meeting with Czech compatriot Renata Voracova at the Bell Challenge on Wednesday with a wrist injury.
 
The world number 12 won the first set 6-2 but after losing the second 6-3, the 18-year-old retired with a right wrist problem.
 
Voracova will face Vania King in the second round of the indoor hardcourt event on Thursday, while elsewhere in the first round, Sofia Arvidsson beat fourth seed Meilen Tu 6-2 6-2, Julie Ditty recorded a 7-5 6-3 victory over sixth seed Alize Cornet and Maret Ani edged out Andreja Klepac 6-2 2-6 6-1.
 
Arvidsson will face Stephanie Foretz in the second round, while American qualifier Ditty and unseeded Ani will battle for a place in the quarter-finals.
 
In second round action, second-seeded Russian Vera Zvonareva, 23, posted a hard-fought 6-3 7-6 (8-6) victory over Severine Bremond of France and will face either eighth seed Olga Poutchkova of Russia or American Jill Craybus in the last eight.
 
Third-seeded Julia Vakulenko of the Ukraine was taken to three sets by Canadian Stephanie Dubois before pulling away with a 6-1 2-6 7-5 victory and will face fifth seed Olga Govortsova for a semi-final berth.
 
Govortsova was lucky to make it out of the second round after her Russian opponent Alina Jidkova was forced to retire while leading 6-3 5-0.
