Ivanovic in stellar form
If anyone is going to stop Ana Ivanovic from going on her maiden voyage to her first Grand Slam title, she is going to have put on an ethereal performance against the sweet-swinging Serbian.
In a sure sign that she has recovered her form and is ready for a stellar second week, the second seed put a 6-0, 6-0 fourth-round pasting on unseeded Czech Petra Cetkovska on Sunday.
Spanish teenage upstart Carla Suarez Navarro continued her surprising run by downing Italian veteran Flavia Pennetta, 6-3, 6-2, and joined Ivanovic in the fourth round
Ivanovic played a near perfect contest, ripping her forehand, serving big and with variety, keeping her backhand steady and jumping on her inexperienced foe's second serves.
“It was much tougher than it probably looked,” the Serbian said. “I had to work really hard, and I played almost without mistake today. She's a good player, and she started first game well and she had a lot of chances afterwards in the second set. But I stepped up and I was really playing my game and really making really few unforced errors.”
Ivanovic, who reached the final here last year before falling to Justine Henin, has had a rocky spring on clay, losing early at Berlin and Rome. But she came to Paris determined and has looked wonderful in her first four matches, losing only 15 games.
“I was really happy the way I performed all these matches so far,” she said. “I really want to keep working hard for it. I'm enjoying going on the court, and I had fun out there today. I want to keep the hard work and keep grinding on the clay.”
The 20-year-old Ivanovic is a more composed player than she once was and in her past five Grand Slams, has reached the second week every time out. She has been able to put her inconsistent tour results behind her and now should be well prepared for a second week assault. She plays the winner of the match between veterans Patty Schnyder and Katernia Srebotnik.
“Obviously I want to peak for a Grand Slams and for biggest tournaments,” she said. “I was really not too happy about a couple of tournaments I had this spring. But still, it was a new situation for me. I was going into this tournament as defending champion or as a favorite, so it's something I have to learn from and become more consistent in those kinds of tournaments and positions. So I really feel like I learned a lot from that and I overcame that hurdle, and now it gives me much more confidence.”
With three-time Roland Garros champion Arantxa Sanchez Vicario cheering her on, Suarez was pumped against Pennetta, who had upset Venus Williams. The 19-year-old is armed with pretty one-handed backhand and a heavily top-spinned forehand, similar to that of Svetlana Kuznetsova. In her Roland Garros debut, she already looks like a player who will be heard from in years to come. After the victory, she tossed a ball high in the air in joy.
“I was just thinking about this beautiful victory,” she said. “I was very happy, and I was looking at my coach, at my mother, at all these people who supported me during this match. I think now for the coming match I need to remain very focused. It's true that I made it here, so it means that it's an opportunity for me.”
Suarez will play the winner of the match between third seed Jelena Jankovic and Polish teen Agnieszka Radwanska.
