Jelena Jankovic made an impressive start to her Mutua Madrileña Madrid Open campaign on Sunday, crushing Nuria Llagostera Vives in the first round of the $4.5-million, Premier-level tournament.

Jankovic, the No.4 seed, lost her service early in each set but broke her wildcard opponent's serve a total of seven times to prevail, 62 61, in just an hour and 16 minutes. She is now 8-0 when playing in Spain this year, having gone 5-0 for first Sony Ericsson WTA Tour title of the season in Marbella in April and 2-0 in Fed Cup play.

Next up for Jankovic will be either Daniela Hantuchova or Gisela Dulko, who play their first round match at the brand new Magic Box venue on Monday.

World No.4 Jankovic was the only Top 10 player in action on Day 2 but a number of players ranked in the rest of the Top 20 took the court. But it wasn't a very good day for them, as all but one of them were wiped out: No.10 seed Agnieszka Radwanska lost to Samantha Stosur, 76(4) 61; No.12 seed Flavia Pennetta lost to Agnes Szavay, 63 67(2) 62; No.13 seed Alizé Cornet fell to Elena Vesnina, 75 61; No.14 seed Anabel Medina Garrigues lost to Vera Dushevina, 63 64; and No.16 seed Kaia Kanepi retired down 62 23 to Lucie Safarova with a left hip injury.

World No.20 Patty Schnyder, who was just one spot out of the seedings, was the only one of the Top 20 to survive, beating Sara Errani handily, 62 63.

Other winners were Li Na, Alona Bondarenko, Petra Kvitova, Anna Keothavong, Anna-Lena Groenefeld, Aravane Rezai and Lourdes Domínguez Lino.

On Monday, the first round will wrap up and the second round will begin. Among the big names playing first rounds is Serena Williams; among the marquee names playing the second round are Elena Dementieva and Nadia Petrova.
