Michelle Larcher de Brito has cut her ranking in more than half this season with some exciting showings on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, including her first career quarterfinal finish at Tashkent. Recently she added another accolade to her growing resumé, receiving the Revelation Award from the Fundacao Luso-Brasiliera (Portuguese-Brazilian Foundation).
The Fundacao Luso-Brasileira is a non-profit foundation dedicated to the promotion of political, economic and cultural relations between Portuguese speaking countries. Since 2005 it has held annual awards to commemorate outstanding individuals and institutions in the Portuguese speaking world. The four awards are Politics, Economics, Culture & Science and Revelation. The ceremony is held at the Casino Estoril in Estoril, nearby Portugal's capital of Lisbon, and draws a whole host of media attention every year.
Fifteen-year-old Larcher de Brito was awarded the Revelation Award this year.
"It was great to be back in Lisbon and it was very exciting to be honored with the Revelation Award. I was really nervous having to give my acceptance speech but I practiced a lot and got through it okay, I think! Everyone at the event was so nice too, and it was pretty cool meeting the other recipients as well."
Other prize winners this year were Jose Manuel Durao Barroso (President of the European Commission), BRISA (a Portuguese corporation with an important international presence) and Vera Tostes and Museum of National History (one of the major Brazilian Museums).
