Great Britain’s Andy Murray qualified to make his debut at Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai after a stellar summer that saw him clinch his first ATP Masters Series shield and reach his first Grand Slam final.

The 21-year-old Scot enjoyed a blistering North American hard-court season. He began with a semifinal showing at Masters Series Canada (l. to Nadal), before capturing his maiden ATP Masters Series shield at Cincinnati (d. Djokovic). The Dunblane native then took his hot form into the US Open. He recorded his first win in six meetings over No. 1 Rafael Nadal in the semifinals to become the first Briton in 11 years to reach a Grand Slam final, which he lost to 13-time major champion Roger Federer 6-2, 7-5, 6-2.

His success saw him rise to a career-high South African Airways ATP Ranking of No. 4 and become the first British representative at the circuit finale since Tim Henman in 2004. Greg Rusedski and Henman also attained a career-high ranking of No. 4 during their careers.

Murray's red-hot form continued into the fall. Beginning with Great Britain's Davis Cup tie against Austria, he went on a 14-match unbeaten run that included back-to-back titles at ATP Masters Series Madrid (d. Simon) and St. Petersburg (d. Golubev) before ending in a quarterfinal defeat to David Nalbandian at ATP Masters Series Paris.

Earlier in the season, the right-hander secured titles at Doha (d. Wawrinka) and Marseille (d. Ancic). He also reached his first Grand Slam quarterfinal at Wimbledon (l. to eventual champion Nadal).
