Amelie Mauresmo and Patty Schnyder will face each other in the quarter finals of the WTA Gold Coast Open after coming through their second round matches in differing ways.

Frenchwoman Mauresmo's injury hit 2007 season saw her drop from the world's top five to 18th.

But the two-time Grand Slam winner looked back to her old self against her compatriot Nathalie Dechy as she played her trademark baseline game to record a 6-3 6-4 win over the 2003 champion.

Schnyder, 26, by contrast, made life difficult for herself as she lost the first set to Francesca Schiavone. But, the Swiss, whose triumphs in 1999 and 2005 make her the only two-time winner of the event, bounced back to win 2-6 6-3 6-4.

Defending champion and third seed Dinara Safina beat another Italian, Flavia Pennetta, 6-4 2-6, 6-4, and will now face Israel's Shahar Peer after the latter beat Julia Schruff when the German retired injured after losing the first set.

In the final match of the day, top seed and world number 12 Nicole Vaidisova thrashed German newcomer Tatjana Malek 6-2 6-4 to set up her quarter-final tie against China's Na Li.

Li beat local Australian girl Monique Adamczak 6-3 6-2.
