Monaco tops Devilder, advances at Vina Del Mar

Fifth-seeded Juan Monaco advanced to the second round at the Movistar Open with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Frenchman Nicolas Devilder on Monday.

The Argentine converted three of eight break points to turn away Devilder in one hour and 23 minutes.

Monaco, who advanced to the tournament final last year, will face Potito Starace. The Italian posted a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Brazilian Marcos Daniel.

In another match, Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina returned to competition for the first time since last June and defeated Pablo Andujar of Spain, 6-0, 3-6, 6-1. Chela had been sidelined with a back injury.

Also on Monday, Paul Capdeville of Chile defeated sixth-seeded Eduardo Schwank of Argentina, 6-3, 6-4, and Martin Vassallo Arguello of Argentina downed eighth-seeded Oscar Hernandez of Spain, 6-3, 7-6 (7-1).

Daniel Gimeno-Traver of Spain also advanced to second round after his opponent, Alberto Martin of Spain, retired with cramps.
