THURSDAY PREVIEW – TOP 11 SEEDS SET UP ENTERTAINING THIRD-ROUND MATCH-UPS
The top 11 seeds are into the third round for the first time in Open Era (since 1968) tournament history, led by top-ranked and two-time winner Roger Federer, No. 2 and defending champion Rafael Nadal, No. 3 Andy Murray, No. 4/2007 champ Novak Djokovic and No. 5/2003 titleholder Andy Roddick. In the opening match on Central, Djokovic and unseeded Russian Mikhail Youzhny meet for the fifth time (tied 2-2). In the second match, Roddick brings an 8-2 lifetime mark against No. 10-seeded Spaniard Fernando Verdasco, and then Nadal takes on unseeded German Philipp Petzschner for the second time (Nadal leads 1-0). In the evening session, Federer takes a 2-1 lifetime mark against unseeded countryman Stanislas Wawrinka. On BN Court, No. 6 Juan Martin del Potro and unseeded Victor Hanescu open the day’s session followed by Murray and former No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero, and No. 8 Nikolay Davydenko against No. 11 Fernando Gonzalez. In the evening session, the top two Frenchmen on the ATP World Tour, No. 7 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and No. 9 Gilles Simon battle for the third time (tied 1-1). Eight of the players have advanced to a Grand Slam final during their career and five have captured Grand Slam titles, led by Federer (15), Nadal (6), Djokovic (1), Ferrero (1) and Roddick (1).
