Paszek eliminates Ivanovic

Seventeen-year-old Austrian Tamira Paszek pulled off the biggest win of her career, upsetting top seeded Serbian Ana Ivanovic 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 in the third round of the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank.
 
Paszek, 94th on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, took advantage of an off night by the Serb, who was unable to gain control of her powerful forehand throughout the match. Ivanovic committed 40 unforced errors, including 31 on the forehand, suffering a heart-breaking loss that might see her lose the number one ranking she has held since she won the French Open.
 
After an erratic first set, Ivanovic, the defending Montreal champion surged in the second set, offering a tennis lesson to her young opponent. But the third set was fatal for the Serb. Attempting big shots when she had the chance to break Paszek, she played with fire and got burned.
 
So far on the circuit, Paszek has won one title – in Portoroz, Slovenia when she was just 15 years old. The previous year, in 2004, she reached the finals of Junior Wimbledon.
 
At the Rogers Cup, Paszek impressed in the first round, eliminating 14th seeded Italian Francesca Schiavone. But her win over Ivanovic is truly the icing on the cake.
 
“I’d like to thank the crowd that has supported me all week long,” said the Austrian, moved to tears. “It’s rare to play in front of such an amazing crowd.”
 
Paszek attributed a large part of her success to her coach Larri Passos. “He represents everything to me. He’s a father, a coach, a counsellor. He prepared me for this match and I owe him everything.”
