The American made a surprise return to the tour and sent shockwaves through the lower tier tournaments. With a full time return plaguing her mind, Lindsay Davenport is taking aim to kick Justine Henin off her high horse.
 
It’s pretty obvious that Lindsay Davenport will climb back into the top 10, but encounters with the likes of the Williams sisters and Justine Henin, will pitch big against the American giant. So what weapons could she use to win another Grandslam and break a sturdy opposition?
 
Davenport ’s gameplan oozes with beauty and talent, it has already seen her three Grandslams and counting. Her serve goes deep with ruthless power and can deliver a sting on both sides. The American’s service motion has its own unique style and rhythm. So when she is on a roll, the serve will keep it going. Lindsay’s returns are notorious for the exceptional depth; she delivers them hard with little mercy.
 
Cleaning hitting is all the range for the Gold medallist, as she is infamous for clean strikes on both wings. The forehand can drill down on both sides; the foot work she employs into it makes the steaming hot weapon a superb defensive mechanism. She can use it as a counter attack, which normally comes through as a lasso forehand. The Backhand is equally as punishing on short balls and can follow through with dazzling conviction.
 
Power, footwork, momentum, consistency and cleaning hitting have built stunning defences and weapons on both wings, a formula for brilliance. Lindsay also brushes up well at the net, as she has captured plenty experience in doubles and knows all too well on employing dropshots and slices.
 
Lindsay Davenport’s mentality is a lesson to us all. So many players have neglected a comeback because of fears of injuries and form. But despite those worries the American made a successfully and resilient comeback. She now eyes a full time return in 2008 and has inspired other players like Monica Seles to make a return. Lindsay can work her way through a match with a strong tactics and strategies. As she is one of the most if not the most aware player to analyse what goes on the other side of the net, she then easily tailor-makes her game to her opponent’s downfall.
 
With hot competition how will she fare against her fellow enemies? Well the biggest competitors will be Justine Henin, the Williams sisters and Maria Sharapova. The one most important ingredient for Davenport to seriously challenge Justine at the top spot is to match her brilliant play with consistency. We have to bear in mind Davenport ’s age but she is strong and has shown in the past that she can be all about consistency.
 
The Williams sisters have always been a challenge to her, especially Venus. Davenport will crave a few matches with them, as their power and mentality will remind Lindsay how tough tennis can be. Unless long-term injuries come into the equation, it’s Inevitable that the American will brack back into the top ten with all guns blazing.
