Tickets for the Davis Cup final sold out in less than a half an hour, but kids can sing their way into the final in a matter of minutes. The USTA today announced it will host an open casting call on Thursday, November 8 for children to perform the national anthem at the Davis Cup final between the United States and Russia, Nov. 30-Dec. 2. Auditions are free.
Several children will be selected to sing at Portland’s Memorial Coliseum, with anticipated performances before each match. The event builds on a tradition begun at this year’s U.S. Open, where children sang prior to the evening sessions in Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The auditions will be held at Memorial Coliseum, 4-8 p.m. Pacific time. Children 11 years of age and younger will be asked to sing the "Star Spangled Banner" a cappella in front of a panel of judges from the Portland area. The tryouts will be conducted on a first-come, first-served basis and offer the chance of a lifetime to the performers as well as an opportunity for fans in the sold-out venue to see some of the region’s young musical talent.
The USTA will announce the final selections on Monday, November 19. The winners will receive four tickets to their performance session — in addition to exposure in front of 12,000 fans in Memorial Coliseum.
Andy Roddick, James Blake and twins Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan will represent the USA which is bidding to capture its record-extending 32nd Davis Cup championship.
Nikolay Davydenko, Mikhail Youzhny, Dmitry Tursunov and Igor Andreev are expected to represent Russia. Play begins at 1 p.m. Pacific time on both Friday, November 30 and Sunday, December 2. Friday features two singles matches, with two reverse singles matches on Sunday. Competition begins at 12:30 p.m. for the pivotal doubles match on Saturday, December 1.
Versus will air live coverage daily and Tennis Channel will air a prime time re-broadcast each evening beginning at 8 p.m. Eastern.
