Sania’s new style

They’ve draped Serena Williams. They are the men behind Dia Mirza’s chic new look. And now, Shantanu and Nikhil Mehra are ready to lift Sania Mirza’s style game a couple of notches. It all began last week with Sania’s mother calling up the Delhi-based designer duo. Sania, now ranked 99 on the singles’ tour, has already worn their first outfit for her on Saturday night at the Cosmopolitan Awards and is due to wear their next on November 8. Over to the Mehra brothers for more…

After Serena, it’s Sania…

(Laugh) Yes! It’s the sporty connect (Shantanu plays tennis quite seriously, much to the envy of brother Nikhil) that comes into play!

Serena was very happy with her outfit in Bangalore and she repeatedly told us how much she loved it. Her agent Elvin was quite stressed that we couldn’t do fittings but it was the perfect fit! Serena wears the best of the world and she doesn’t need to compliment us so much, but she did.

Sania too is very happy with her outfits. Actually, we don’t know how it happened. Maybe she saw some Bollywood actresses (the duo design for Dia Mirza regularly and often dresses Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra, Katrina Kaif). Maybe Serena told her, since they play together and also talk a lot.

So how did the first meeting go?

Sania is a lovely girl. She is very stylish and knows her stuff very well. She looked beautiful in her jeans and tee when she came to our Delhi store in Defence Colony where we take our couture appointments. We chatted with her first, got to know her style and studied her body type. We didn’t want her to try 10 things and then choose something because then the process is not nice. After interacting with her for a bit, we just closed our eyes for 30 seconds and visualised her in two garments. These are the only two garments she tried and that is exactly what she decided to go for. Our manager met her in Mumbai for her fittings and everything was perfect.

And what are these two outfits?

The first one that she wore on Saturday is a black and steel blue bandage dress. It has a wide V-neck and straps across and over her shoulders. It is knee-length so there is no scope for trouble! The other dress is red. That also has a wide neck and cap sleeves. It is a classic pencil silhouette with a waistband with old Indian jewellery embroidery.

Sania has classic style. Her body type is perfect for the silhouettes from the 1950s. I think our look for her worked well because we stuck to simple sophistication. We didn’t do the flowy gown look with a low neck and low back! Sania is such an iconic figure and she is just so humble. It is her humility that makes her bigger than what she is. We’re still interacting with her on SMS to discuss her style.
