Tenth-seed Marion Bartoli of France and Switzerland’s Patty Schnyder (9th) advanced to the second round of the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank Tuesday afternoon at the Uniprix Stadium in Montreal.
Bartoli, last year’s Wimbledon finalist, needed three sets to eliminate British qualifier Melanie South 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-0. Bartoli struggled with health issues in the second set and had to call a trainer to the court.
“I didn’t feel well at all,” she said. “My legs were shaking and I felt really weak. Luckily, I recuperated and was able to win the match. I don’t think I’m the only player to have this problem over these last few days.
“It seems to be a virus. They’re telling us not to share glasses or plates with other players to avoid contamination. I don’t know where the virus is coming from but it’s very annoying. I feel better right now and I hope to go far in the tournament.”
Schnyder found herself in tough position, falling behind 5-1 in the first set against China’s Meng Yuan. But she managed to come from behind to take the set 7-6(6) and was up 3-2 in the second when Yuan retired with back spasms.
Also advancing to the second round of the $1,340,000 Sony Ericsson WTA tournament on Monday afternoon were Czech Petra Kvitova, Aravane Razzano of France, l5-year-old Michelle Larcher de Brito of Portugal, Romanian Monica Niculescu, Russia’s Anastasia Rodionova and Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia.
