Serena Williams has confirmed her participation in next year's Sydney International, a lead-up to the Australian Open, after escaping a ban over her US Open tirade.

The world number one was fined $175 000 and placed on a two-year probation for her foul-mouthed attack on a line judge at Flushing Meadows in September.

The suspended ban means Williams will be able to defend her Australian Open title in late January and the American said she planned to warm up for the first grand slam of 2010 by playing the Jan. 10-16 Sydney tournament.

"I really enjoyed my time in Sydney this year and I am really looking forward to being back there in just a few weeks time," she said in a statement on Tuesday.

Tournament Director Craig Watson said he was pleased to welcome Williams back to Sydney.

"Serena is a genuine superstar in world sport and we are delighted that she has re-confirmed her commitment," he said.
