Following an early exit from the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami, former world No. 1 Amelie Mauresmo has taken a wildcard into the main draw of the Bausch and Lomb Championships, which begins April 7 in Amelia Island, Fla.

"We are thrilled Amelie will be returning to the Bausch and Lomb Championships," said John Arrix, tournament director. "Besides being a past champion, Amelie joins [Lindsay] Davenport and [Venus] Williams in our draw as part of an elite group of former number one in the world ranked players."

Mauresmo lost in the third round this week at Miami to unseeded Jie Zheng of China. The Frenchwoman has a win-loss record of 3-3 this year, and sits at No. 24 on the WTA Tour Rankings. Earlier this year she said she was struggling with her motivation and had entertained thoughts of retiring.

Russia Nadia Petrova sustained an injury in Miami and was forced to withdraw from Amelia Island.

"I sustained a tear in my right quad muscle when competing at the Sony Ericsson Open, Miami," Petrova said. "I am very sorry to be missing two of my favorite events. Amelia Island and Charleston, from which I have many happy memories."

Mauresmo joins a field that includes Anna Chakvetadze, Williams, Marion Bartoli, Elena Dementieva, Patty Schnyder, Nicole Vaidisova, Dinara Safina, Vera Zvonareva and Davenport.
