Wozniacki dispatches Gullickson in straight sets
Number one womens player Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark easily ran over American wild card Chelsey Gullickson 6-1, 6-1 in their first round match Tuesday night in Arthur Ashe.
The two women didn't meet on court until 12 a.m. after lengthy previous matches at Arthur Ashe pushed their start time into the far reaches of night. The Georgia peach Gullickson, a rising junior at University of Georgia and the 2010 NCAA singles champion, seemed to be thrown off by the late start and the pressure of performing on such a big stage. While she was returning Wozniacki's serves and battling it out on the baseline exhibiting a promising powerful forehand, Gullickson was her own worst enemy on the court, logging 30 unforced errors and four double faults.
Wozniacki for her part was strong and steady, only logging six winners and two aces, but playing patiently and allowing to Gullickson make mistakes.
"Well, definitely it's a long night," the 20-year-old Wozniacki said following the hour-long match that ended at 1 a.m. "The matches before on the center court were so long. But, a win is a win, so it doesn't really matter what time I get on. As long as I win, I'm happy."
Wozniacki advanced to the finals of the 2009 US Open, falling to Kim Clijsters 5-7, 3-6. It was her best Grand Slam performance in her young career. Her best performance in 2010 leading up to this year's US Open was at Roland Garros where she advanced to the quarterfinals. Wozniacki will face Kai-Chen Chang of China in the second round.
